Majors release: update five

July 4, 2006

Fifteen out of the sixteen people who were in the waitlist were from LR19, that block falling victim to a run-out of English 3 slots, thanks to a loss of free cuts and an important quiz in Philosophy class. After asking their respective teachers for permission to make the very important meeting, almost everybody converged at the offices of the Department of Communication, anxious about what could possibly happen, or what would come up.

Hours ago, everyone has seen the results - a hundred names in total, eighty-four making the much-coveted accepted list. Literature 1 as a prerequisite was thrown out of the window: the sixteen on the list, me included, are currently taking English 3 class. This means Clarence can be on the list because she’s currently taking Literature 1 but has (somehow) cross-enrolled English 3 last term.

There was initial confusion upon the release - Derek, for example, was surprised to not see his name on the list, despite his claims that his CGPA is higher than 3.0. Later on the departent admitted to almost losing his file when they were collating the list: it was found later on under one of the many desks in M209.

Huey, however, didn’t make it - his CGPA, apparently, was low enough to warrant an inclusion, and throughout the morning he was slumped in the walls near the office, and later near M308, and everybody somehow tried to cheer him up. Thankfully he did, but not after closely contemplating his options, of whether he could get through with conditions, or of shifting courses, or of moving to another school altogether.

The compromise with us waitlisters is fairly easy, I should say. Although the presence of Miss Cruz, the department chair, somehow intimidates, the entire thing went smoothly. (We somehow wanted to talk about what we might say earlier in the afternoon.) When Cuyeg and I arrived at around 13.30, along with some of the BonoSoc members (Jaja and Lau have begged out of the talk and it remains unsure whether they’ve heard of the conditions beforehand) and Kizia - her attendance somehow surprised the others - Icka and Toni were already there, waiting.

The list, arranged by highest to lowest CGPA, was at hand, and when I got in I was asked about why we didn’t get the slots, unlike the eighty-four who have made it. The way she put it, “you almost lost your slot with us” - but all we have to do is submit our English 3 course card on course card distribution day, to her personally, and maintain a CGPA not lower than 2.3. (Apparently the lowest CGPA among the sixteen stood at 2.33.) Any “violation” of the two, she says, would forfeit the acceptance conditions, but enrollment processes would still remain the same.

And then we were off to what we were doing. So much for the fuss, apparently? Well, maybe not. After Les took down the list for copying, I left the building and started to organize my thoughts. Things could get so lucky after all. Only catch is, we have to do more, or do even more.
